Homemade BBQ Sauce

Hey Y’all. Wanted to check in from Texas where it will be in the mid-90’s the next few days.
This week I want to share my homemade BBQ sauce recipe. My husband, Glenn, and I have tried many store bought sauces. Some are okay and some are not.
I looked at different recipes and finally developed one we both love, and I have been making it for quite a few years now.
It is simple and delicious.
Here’s what you will need:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 yellow onion
- 1 clove garlic (I prefer fresh)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (I usually increase this a bit)
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups ketchup (I use Heinz)
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Heat the olive oil. Add onion, salt and chili powder. Stir about 5 minutes.
Whisk in brown sugar. Pour in water and slowly beat until dissolved.
Stir in the ketchup and apple cider vinegar. Simmer until thick.
Now, I usually double the recipe because we use it a lot, which makes about 2 quarts and 1 pint.
I would love to know if you try it and if you like it.
Enjoy!

Sandra,
This looks yummy, But how much brown sugar? You don’t list that in the ingredients.
Happy first day of summer and happy barbecuing!
Suzanne
Thanks for catching that Suzanne. It is 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar and it has been updated on my website.
