Summertime in Michigan
My parents travel to the upper peninsula of Michigan in their motor home every summer to get away from the Texas heat.
It takes them approximately three to six weeks to drive to Marenisco, Michigan. My stepdad, Garth, does all the driving, and Mom is the navigator.
Why does it take them so long to get there you ask?
There are a lot of reasons it takes my parents more time to get to their destination. Here are a few of the popular ones:
- It is 1,303 miles from where they live
- They only like to travel so many miles per day
- The weather can keep them in place an extra day or two
- They take the wrong turn but they always find and see something new
- Slot machines and blackjack
Once they get to Marenisco, they have a parking space near some friends that they use every year. When they arrive, they back right in to the spot.
Garth gets out to stretch his legs and levels the motor home. Then he hooks it up to water and electricity and opens the awning for shade.
Meanwhile, Mom hangs the curtain across the front window for privacy and pushes the buttons to open the slide outs that give them extra room.
My parents have made some good friends up there. They get together and go out to eat, travel to the casinos or just play a game at someone’s house.
One of the games they play is Mexican Train. It is a domino game that can have four to ten players so they can play with one couple or multiple people.
One evening, they were playing with two or three other couples. Everyone was enjoying the company and having a good time.
Garth was having trouble getting a piece of gum out of his mouth with just his tongue and it started bothering him.
So, he stuck his index finger and thumb in his mouth to get the gum loose and pulled.
His false teeth flew across the table.
Dominoes were knocked down and his teeth came to rest in front of one of the men sitting across from him.
Everyone laughed hysterically. Garth calmly got up and retrieved his teeth. He removed the gum and popped his teeth back in his mouth like he did it all the time.
