Strive for a positive attitude, even when you don’t feel like it. A positive frame of mind increases your energy and happiness and helps you see potential problems or failures masked as blessings.
Remez Sasson says “With a positive attitude you see the bright side of life, become optimistic, and expect the best to happen. It is certainly a state of mind that is well worth developing.”
Here are a few examples to show how I looked for the positive from my own life.
My mother-in-law was walking to her house from her sister’s house when she missed a step and fell to the ground. We didn’t move her and called 9-1-1 so an ambulance could take her to the hospital to be checked out.
Positive: Nothing was broken. The hospital performed a CAT scan and x-rays and she is bruised and sore but otherwise okay.
My step-dad called me last night to tell me they took my Mom to the hospital and were keeping her overnight. She had been disoriented, stumbling when she walked and it was getting hard to move around.
Positive: She has pneumonia. The doctor first thought it was a stroke and pneumonia is more treatable and she is already feeling better.
I have been studying for a certification exam for work. It has been over a month since I took the training and I feel like I am back in school and cramming for a test.
Positive: I have a job. I am thankful that I have a job to complain about and try to never take for granted.
I have a few chronic conditions like depression and migraines that I live with all the time. I take medicine but there are still some days when I just feel down and sorry for myself.
Positive: There are others worse off than me. I have been lucky that everything I have had in my life has been treatable. There are so many others that have cancer or are paralyzed or have some other awful diseases out there.
This is just a small sampling of ways to keep a positive attitude when facing a situation that seems dire. In addition to helping yourself see the good, you help others to see it as well.
I challenge you this week to focus on the positive for each thing you face and see how much better you feel. Provide your accomplishments in the comments below.
