Putting out fires. That is what today has been. Every time I tried to work on a task, another fire had to be extinguished. Just call me the fire fighter.
I had two overlapping meetings in the morning and ended up missing both of them due to a higher priority item. One of my staff attended the first one but no one from my area attended the other one. Guess we will wait for the minutes on that one.
Next, a long-standing process was changed without any notice or explanation. This required an extra phone meeting to get clarification of the new process and our document review took longer that expected. I just love when things change and no one tells us.
I was meeting with a colleague via phone as we talked about the overlapping sections of our information. This is an important project so it took a little time to wade through everything. While I was meeting with him, I missed 3 calls. Really? Incoming calls are few and far between for me based on my job but today disproved that fact.
Then…I lost an email. That’s right. It arrived in my inbox and I forwarded it to the right person for correct routing to a vendor. I was speaking to a co-worker and was relaying the information from the email but I couldn’t find it to send it to her. It wasn’t in my sent folder or my deleted folder or any other folder. It was gone. I got another copy but never found the original.
My attendance was required in four unscheduled meetings in between fires with another issue arising from one of these meetings. I noted the risks since it is a high priority project and moved to the next one. Finally I had two minutes to run down the hall and made it back just in time for the start of the meeting.
Even though today was hectic, I was able to keep a positive attitude throughout. Everything was fixable and no one died.
Days like this are good and bad. They tend to go by quickly but many more things went wrong than right today. So, I’m home where I can relax and will go back and start again tomorrow. The joys of working full-time as a government employee and all around fire fighter.
