Even as an adult, I am still afraid of the dark. Some of you may have read about this in a previous post. As I get older, it is not as bad but every once in a while I have a rude awakening in the night reminding me of my fear.
My husband travels for work on occasion and this night he was staying overnight. I don’t mind these nights as long as there are not too many in a row. As it got closer to bedtime, I searched each room to show myself that I was alone in the house.
I turned on the house alarm and fell asleep without incident. My whole body jolted awake by the piercing sound of the alarm. Opening my eyes I felt disoriented from this rude awakening and then fear took hold. I rolled off my side of the bed away from the door as I grabbed my phone from the night stand.
Raising my head slowly, I peeked over the bed to see if there was any movement from my vantage point. A million things were going through my mind. The alarm continued to blare as I dialed 9-1-1. When the person answered the phone, I relayed what had happened. She told me to stay on the line until the officer arrived.
So, I sat hunkered down on the floor until the dispatcher told me the officer was there. I asked if he could come to the back door so I didn’t have to walk through the house by myself. When the officer arrived, I ran the short distance to the back door and outside to where he was standing.
I explained what happened and followed him inside. He had me turn the alarm off first and then he was kind enough to search every room and closet in the house before he left. We couldn’t find anything that should have caused the alarm to go off. I was finally calm enough and he left the house.
I reset the alarm and left most of the lights on the rest of the night. I’m sure I got back into bed but I don’t remember if I slept anymore. The alarm company came out the next day and they couldn’t find a reason it went off in the middle of the night either. They said it was just a fluke.
Well, this “fluke” took about ten years off my life. Not only was I afraid, but it was also hard to feel safe in my own house for a while. I eventually got over it but it is a night I will never forget.
